Aage Nielsen of the Sparkman and Stephens office, she was built by Remigio Hernandorena of Havana, Cuba in his own boat yard and was launched in 1942. Over the years she proved herself as a worthy adversary to many of the more well known yachts of the day, beating Stormy Weather in the Miami Nassau Race of 1948. She went on to have an illustrious racing career, much of which is well documented and available for any new owner to indulge in. Bought by the present very experienced owners in America, she has been used mainly for cruising around the Eastern Mediterranean but still shows her pedigree and pace even when not under race conditions. Originally designed as a 51ft sloop boat but altered to a yawl in the early 1950’s due to rating rules, she was converted back to her original sail plan with modern alloy spars which she sails with today. Sloop Ship She has an unusual deck layout not often seen this side of the Atlantic where the entrance hatch is in the coachroof forward of the cockpit. This allows space for the large aft cabin and makes the deep cockpit a safe and comfortable area with its small doghouse giving shelter to the crew. This is a remarkable yacht in very nice condition, very capable of picking up her racing career once again if a new owner chose and would be able to hold her head high in the classic regattas of today. Length on Deck 51’8″ Length Waterline 34′ Beam 11’6″ Draft 7′ Construction Planked in Honduras and Cuban mahogany, all bronze screw fastened to sawn frames Grown wooden floors across the centreline with bronze bolts External lead ballast keel with bronze bolts. Bolts last drawn in 2004. Marine Plywood deck screwed to the deck beams. Sheathed externally and finished in deck paint. Varnished teak coachroof and cockpit coamings with bronze portholes Self-draining cockpit with wheel steering on cables. Rig Bermudan masthead sloop rig on a keel-stepped alloy mast, finished in white. Slab reefing alloy boom, also finished in white. Stainless steel standing rigging, new in 2004, to internal chain plates. Full set of Barient and Lewmar self tailing winches Sails include fully battened main, genoa, jib and spinnaker Machinery Perkins 4108 48hp diesel. Rebuilt and serviced regularly Hurth ZX12 gearbox with stainless shaft to centreline fixed 3 blade bronze propeller. 6.5kts max speed. 2 x 40 gallon Monel fuel tanks under the cockpit sole 100 gallon water tank under the saloon cabin sole. 12 volt and 240 volt systems. 3 batteries plus an installed shore power system Accommodation 7 berths including two singles in a very nice aft cabin. Two pilot berths and two saloon settee berths in the saloon. Single berth in the forepeak. The unusual layout means the forward end of the cockpit has a fixed bulkhead with the entrance hatch to the cabin located in the starboard side of the coachroof forward of the cockpit, allowing space for the aft cabin. Steps down from the sliding hatch into the main saloon with a chart desk to starboard and heads to port. Chart desk faces outboard with a switch panel hidden in a teak box. Heads compartment can be accessed from either the saloon or the aft cabin. Blakes sea toilet can be discharged overboard or into a black tank. Shower and basin drain to a grey water tank. Aft cabin accessed on the port side. A single berth each side under the deck with a central chest of drawers in varnished teak. All original joinery in very nice condition. Main saloon finished with rich varnished teak, much of it showing the patina of age. Drop leaf saloon table offset to port with a settee berth and pilot berth each side. Settee berths pull out to give extra width when required. Some nice original joinery including a chest of drawers and drinks shelf at the forward end. Doorway to starboard going forward into the galley. 2 burner gas stove with oven and grill plus a single stainless sink with manually pumped fresh water. Wooden Ships Comments on this Sparkman and Stephens teak sloop Designed by Sparkman and Stephens, S&S drawing No.153 dated 9th December 1936. Built by AH King Slipways, Hong Kong in 1949. Supposedly built for Ambassador Carlos Romulo of the Philippines, a general, journalist, WWII resistance fighter and later a UN representative. Brought to New York while Romulo was working for the UN, she came into the present family ownership in 1967, sailing out of Maine for many years before moving to the eastern Mediterranean in 1992 where she has remained ever since. Her exact condition is not clear, but given the quality of her hull planking it is likely the hull can be restored. Some work is certainly required around the stern post. The interior is quite remarkable, completely original and untouched, she is a real time capsule and a very rare opportunity for someone looking to restore their own classic yacht. The owner is anxious to find a suitable new custodian who is able to give the boat the sympathetic refit she deserves. Length on Deck 45’ Length Waterline 32’ Beam 10’6” Draft 6’ Construction Burma teak hull with a layer of diagonal planking overlaid with fore and aft planking. All copper rivet fastened to steam bent timbers. Lead ballast keel with bronze keel bolts. Varnished teak toe rails, coamings and cockpit. Laid deck covered in Dynal and painted with deck paint. Rig Fractionally rigged Bermudan cutter on a keel stepped Sitka spruce mast. Slab or roller reefing wooden boom. Stainless steel standing rigging to internal chain plates. Running rigging is complete. Harken roller furling headsail system. Sails include mainsail, 120% genoa, smaller genoa, storm jib and spinnaker. Merriman bronze non-self tailing sheet winches. Barient captive wire main halyard winch. Machinery Greyhound 40hp petrol engine to a 2 blade offset propeller. Accommodation 6 berths including 2 single quarter berths, 2 settee berths, 1 pilot berth and a pipecot in the forepeak. Teak and cane interior is entirely original and could be considered a ‘time capsule’. All varnished teak joinery in its original form. Steps down over the engine with a quarter berth either side. Chart desk drops down over the port side quarter berth when required. Main saloon with a settee berth either side and original joinery outboard. Pilot berth to starboard. Starboard side passage going forward with heads compartment to port. Galley is forward of the mast as was common at the time this yacht was build. Centreline door into the large forepeak with a pipecot berth and storage space. This is where the paid hand would have lived with direct access to the galley. Windigo Boat | 73' Hinckley 1956 S/Y Windigo is a magnificient ocean racer built by Henry Hinckley on Sparkman & Stephens design in 1956.The yacht was built for Hal Haskell of Wilmington, Delaware. In 2004, Windigo received a prestigious restoration by the Classic Yachts Management and Cantiere Sangermani. It was a respectful and philologic operation. All the inside parts were carefully removed, checked thoroughly, restored and put back together allowing the passage of new hydraulic-electric systems. A new teak deck was layed on best plywood. A new 200 Yanmar engine was installed together with new masts, standing and running rigging. Following the restoration, Windigo took part in some important races and had excellent results, like a third at Argentario Sailing Week 2006. At the Capraia race 2005 and 2006 she was first of her class and overall, Third overall at the Mahon-Porto Rotondo in 2006 and she won the CIM Championship in 2006. Following a new session of restoration at Cantieri dell'Argentario in 2013, all the mahogany hull planking was completely changed with thorough check, restoration or new construction where needed of frames and floors. Total fastening in silicon bronze screws was done as well. The yacht is perfectly maintained.
